Lion Sports Update 02/21

Baseball
Combining forces to account for two games on the same day, the varsity and JV baseball teams turned in solid performances this past Saturday, defeating Pantego Christian (16-0) and Thomas Jefferson (9-1). Everyone on both teams got significant time on the field, and the affable camaraderie established from the freshmen through the senior classes was palpable. Sophomore Cole Arnett and junior Will Forbes shut out the Pantego Christian offense through five scoreless innings of work, and freshman Alek Houillion, freshman Mason Rareshide, and senior Todd Murphy stifled Thomas Jefferson’s bats as well. The Lions’ defense was steady throughout both games, as both the infield and outfield made routine plays behind quality pitching. Mason Rareshide dominated the offensive categories, going 4-4 on the day with multiple extra base hits and several runs scored. On a side note, the baseball program gives a tip of the cap to the Thomas Jefferson coaches and players, who graciously agreed to fill in a scrimmage for us at the last minute by traveling over after they had already played an earlier contest at another site that same day. Both the JV and Varsity have games vs. Trinity Valley on Tuesday this week, as the Lions continue to ramp up for the first game of the SPC counter season vs. Casady on March 4.

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team took on Austin Westlake last Friday night.  Westlake is 6A program who advanced to the state final four in 2016. Westlake took an early 4-1 lead, but the Lions came back in 2nd quarter and tied the game at 4-4 at the half.  Westlake then went on a 3 goal run, taking advantage of a man up opportunity in 3rd quarter which proved to be the difference in the game, but the Lions battled hard until the end eventually losing 6-9.  All things considered, it was a good outing for an early February game against a team that has had an opportunity to practice much longer this spring.  The Lions scorers were:  Jake Vaughn ’17 (1g 1a),  Luke Rogers ’17 (2g), Sam Schroeder ’18 (1g),  Rish Basu ’17 (1g),  Will Cotten ’17 (1g),  and Garrett Mize ’18 (1a).  Case Lowry ’17 dominated the faceoffs 13-4 (76%) and goalie John Gunnin ’18 recorded 12 saves on the night.  Next up, the Lions will host St. Stephen’s this Friday at 6 pm.

Alumni Athlete News
Parker Dixon ’16, a member of the Princeton Men’s Volleyball team, had a great week. He was named National Freshman of the Week for all NCAA Division I-II for his efforts during the Tigers’ two games last week. Parker was also named the EIVA Offensive Player of the Week and earned Princeton's first AVCA National Player of the Week honor since Jason Morrow ’00.  Princeton is now tied for first in the EIVA Division of the NCAA.
