Lion Sports Update (10/18)

FOOTBALL
On Friday night, the Lions’ football team traveled to Houston and took a 49-13 loss to the still undefeated St. John’s Mavericks. The Lions jumped out early, as Keats Leffel tackled the St. John’s punter in the opponents’ territory to set up a scoring drive capped by a 1-yard TD run by Asher Wilburn. Ultimately, the Lions’ defense was unable to consistently stop the Mavericks’ rushing attack and St. John’s carried the day. While the Lions’ offense moved the ball, buoyed by Niles Harvey’s 92 total yards, they were unable to convert on critical fourth downs and ultimately came up short. The 5-2 Lions return home to play Episcopal High School of Houston for this Friday’s Homecoming Game at 7:00 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL
The varsity volleyball team played two SPC North Zone counter matches last week. On Tuesday, the Lions hosted Ft. Worth Country Day and made quick work of the Falcons, winning 3-0. On Friday, the team traveled to Greenhill. The match couldn’t have been closer, needing all 5 sets to determine a winner. In the 5th set tied 15-all, a replay of a point went to the Hornets and a few points later, they also took the final set (18-16) and the match. The Lions sit firmly in third place in the SPC North Zone (8-3, 3-2 SPC NZ) traveling to Excel Volleyball Club (at Courtside Sports Center in Carrollton) on Tuesday and then host Trinity Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Homecoming Friday in a crucial SPC counter match.

CROSS COUNTRY
The varsity cross country team engaged in a “friendly” two-mile run on the track at Greenhill on Saturday. The varsity group “sandwiched” the run in-between 2 x 20 min long runs around their campus before and after the race on the track. Sahil Dodda cruised to a 9:41, followed by Raja Mehendale with an impressive 10:17. The rest of the team ran well and then finished off with another good long run. This week the entire team will compete in the SPC North Zone Meet on Friday, Oct. 22 at 9:45 am at Norbuck Park.
