Lion Sports Update (04/08)

Tennis
The varsity tennis team officially kicked off the SPC North Zone season in great shape with its first two counter matches last week. On Monday, the team traveled to Arlington to take on Oakridge. It didn’t take long for St. Mark’s to get through all of their matches, hardly dropping any games. At Lines 1, 2, and 3 singles, junior Jeremy Yu, sophomore Patrick Flanagan, and senior Max Wu swiftly took down their opponents, winning 6-0, 6-0. Juniors Ekansh Tambe and Alex Ryan also dominated at line 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Shreyan Daulat, alongside freshman Amogh Naganand played their first counter match for the Lions and didn’t drop a game, winning 6-0, 6-0. On Thursday, the team made the long trek to Oklahoma to take on Casady. The players continued to demonstrate excellent playing skills. At lines 1 and 2 singles, Jeremy Yu and Patrick Flanagan played flawless matches, continuing their 6-0, 6-0 winning streak. Max Wu at Line 3 had a bit of a slow start going down 0-2, only to come back and win the match 6-2,6-1. The duo of Ekansh Tambe and Alex Ryan displayed great teamwork to get through a tough moment in the match, pulling off a tight second set to finish at 6-1, 6-4. Shreyan Daulat and Amogh Naganand continued to show tremendous doubles skills at the net, winning 6-0, 6-1. All in all, the tennis team is off to a very positive and promising start to the season.

Baseball
The varsity baseball team was busy with two counter road matchups to open SPC North Zone play this past week. On Tuesday, St. Mark’s traveled to North Arlington to play Oakridge. Senior LHP Daniel Sanchez faced a formidable Oakridge batting order, but he consistently minimized potential big innings for the Owls with his quality pitching and some great defensive play behind him. Exiting the game with a 3-2 lead, Sanchez turned the ball over to junior RHP Camden Reeves, who baffled Oakridge hitters through four innings of stellar work. With the bases juiced in the fifth inning, Sanchez broke the game open with a three-run double to left center. Marlon Henderson and Luke Annett smashed doubles while Abe Echt, Jacob Bell, Alex Zuch, and Silas Hosler collected RBIs and runs scored. The game ended with a 9-4 St. Mark’s victory. On Thursday, the Lions journeyed to Oklahoma City to face Casady. Senior ace Jake Daniels set the tone early, striking out the side in the first inning after a catcher’s interference and walk put two Cyclone runners on base. Daniels also got the Lions’ offense going with a two-out, two-RBI single earlier that inning. Senior Alex Zuch (3 hits, 3 runs scored, and 3 RBIs) and sophomore Silas Hosler (2 hits, 3 runs scored, and 2 RBIs) paced the offense, while Daniels cruised through four dominant innings (0 hits, 0 runs, 10 Ks). Senior Luke Annett (1 hit, 2 runs scored, and 3 RBIs), junior Camden Reeves (1 hit, 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI), and junior Cal Graham (1 hit, 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI) added to an impressive hitting stat sheet while senior Klyde Warren sealed the game (0 hits and 0 runs) for St. Mark’s, ending an impressive 19-0 no-hit victory in five innings.

Golf
On March 31, the varsity golf team sent eight Marksmen to play 18 holes at the site of this year’s SPC North Zone championship tournament, set to take place in less than 4 weeks. The Lions outscored Parish by a wide margin, but then lost in match play to Ft. Worth Country Day by a single stroke. The experience was disappointing but gave the team a good look at the course and one of the SPC’s toughest opponents, which will prove valuable and will motivate the Marskmen to prepare well. Junior Anashay Monga led the team with a 79. The following evening, juniors Logan Johnson and Matthew Fan, sophomore Tommy Zheng, and freshmen Harry Wang and Charlie Hill competed against Shelton in a 9-hole match at Sherrill Park. Logan and Tommy led the way, both turning in solid 2-over-par performances to secure comfortable victories against their opponents, putting the pressure squarely on the shoulders of Charlie, Harry, and Matthew. Shelton’s #3, #4, and #5 golfers all scored well out of the gates and held leads of at least 1 stroke in each match after three holes. The Lions battled to flip the script, but after 7 holes, Shelton maintained a 2-hole lead in 2 of the 3 matches with 2 holes remaining. Harry Wang couldn’t quite win the 8th hole but overcame an OB tee shot on the 9th with a MARVELOUS up-and-down (outdone only by a par-saving pitch shot that hit the pin and gave him a tap-in win two holes prior). Matthew Fan also had a tremendous 9th hole, thanks to stellar back-to-back swings that gave him a 10-footer for birdie. However, he was also unable to win the 8th, which meant that Charlie Hill HAD to win his matchup. With the score all square through 6 holes, Charlie took advantage of his opponent’s mistakes on the 7th, but then bogeyed the 8th to set up a 9th hole grand finale. Unphased by the moment, Charlie calmly kept his focus and won the hole, giving the Lions a 3-2 victory!

Water Polo
The water polo program played on Friday night and Saturday afternoon this past weekend. On Friday, the JV water polo team was doing what they do best. Game one saw the Lions taking out Denton Guyer 20-3, and, in game two, they defeated Flower Mound Marcus 19-2 with a balanced scoring attack that had 10 goal scorers on an 11 man roster. Even more impressive than the score was the defensive side of the game holding their opponents to just 5 goals in 8 quarters of play. On Saturday, the varsity team followed the lead of the JV team and easily handled their opponents Southlake Carroll (16-3) and Denton Guyer (20-6). Ten of the 12-man roster would net at least one goal, and defensively the team would hold true keeping their weekend score under 10 goals.

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team played two road games last week. On Tuesday, the Lions faced Plano West. The Lions were hot early and got off to a 9-0 lead in the 1st quarter, eventually winning the game 16-2. Top scorers were: Jake Park (4 goals, 1 assist), Henry Piccagli (4 goals), Ian Mize (3 goals, 1 assist), and Niles Harvey, Luke Stallings, Jackson Pennington, and Connor Duffy with 1 goal apiece. Then on Friday, the Lions went to Allen HS. The Lions were down from the very beginning, but fought hard to tie the game in the 3rdquarter. With only 3+ minutes left in the game, Allen had built a 2 goal lead, but Jake Park and Ian Mize scored back to back to knot the game at 8-8. The Lions had one last shot to take the lead, but the Allen goalie made a nice save and Allen’s transition offense led to a game winner for the Eagles with only 6 seconds remaining in the game. Alex Geng was outstanding in the faceoff X, winning 18 of 21 faceoffs in the game.
