Lion Sports Update (01/12)
Basketball
The varsity basketball team finished the 2020 calendar year with a pair of road games right before the break. On Thursday, December 17, the Lions traveled to Waxahachie High School for a showdown between two of the state’s top five teams. The Marksmen dug themselves an early hole but managed to turn an eight-point deficit into a three-point halftime lead, thanks in large part to freshman Nathan Davis scoring 5 points and holding Waxahachie’s best player scoreless. Tate Laczkowski’s 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and fellow junior Corvin Oprea’s team-high 19 points paced the Lions in a seesaw battle that came down to the wire. Unfortunately, St. Mark’s couldn’t capitalize on a couple of late opportunities and lost the game by three. The next night, the Lions played at Rockwall High School. Laczkowski once again reached double figures, and senior Harrison Ingram initiated time and again (21 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists) against a scrappy and determined Rockwall opponent that had a chance to win at the buzzer but came up short, resulting in a 59-57 St. Mark's victory. This week, the Lions begin SPC play with a Tuesday trip to Fort Worth Country Day and a Friday home game against Trinity Valley. Soccer
The varsity soccer team continued its excellent form during the final week before the holiday break. On Monday, December 14, the Lions traveled to Bishop Lynch and earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory with goals from seniors Eric Yoo and Christian Shadle, both assisted by senior Henry McElhaney. The Lions hosted Greenhill on December 16, dominating early then withstanding significant pressure from the Hornets before finishing late with a 4-1 final score. The next evening, goals from sophomore Akash Munshi and junior Lars Ochs sealed a two-goal shutout for St. Mark’s at Trinity Christian Academy (Addison). Strong defense and excellent goalkeeping from the trio of juniors Stefan Moreno, Axel Icazbalceta, and Grant Jackson have enabled the Lions to concede an average of less than a goal per match. Over the holiday, St. Mark’s hosted TCA. While both teams were not at full strength, the match proved to be quite thrilling, with the Trojans erasing an early two-goal deficit by halftime. Junior Noah Soliz put the Lions ahead in the last quarter-hour before Lars Ochs sealed the deal to see the Lions emerge victorious, 5-2. The play of junior Zack Stone and senior Cristian Pereira contributed significantly to victory for the Lions. St. Mark’s now begins north zone counterplay by traveling to Ft. Swimming
The varsity swim team was inactive over the holiday break, unable to compete in their one scheduled meet during that time frame due to the remote week. This week, they will go on the road and compete against two Texas heavy-weights in Highland Park (January 12) and Southlake Carroll (January 14).
Wrestling
The varsity wrestling team is making the most of their time while stuck in Covid-limbo by lifting weights as a team, doing numerous socially distanced conditioning activities, and working on individual skills on the mat. They are hopeful that they will be cleared for contact soon so that they can begin wrestling this winter.

Ty Montgomery ’11 got the start at running back for the New Orleans Saints in their final regular-season game in the NFL’s week 17. Ty rushed for 105 yards on 18 carries (5.8 ypc) and caught one pass out of the backfield.
