Lion Sports Update 09/09
Football
The varsity football team hosted Cistercian on Friday night in the 2019 home opener. The Lions stormed out of the gate, putting up 34 unanswered points in the first half on 3 rushing TDs by Anthony Andrews (x2) and Kason Roberson and 2 receiving TDs by Paxton Scott. With the large lead, the Lions were able to get extra work for many of the backups in a game that saw St. Mark’s improve in almost every facet of the game. Andrews threw for 264 yards and 2 TDs and ran for another 100 yards and 2 TDs (almost all of that in just the first half). Scott caught 3 passes for 131 yards and 2 TDs and Conor Duffy caught 5 passes for 88 yards. Roberson rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown. The Lions are off this week and will begin their SPC 4A counter schedules on September 20 against the defending SPC Champions, the Kinkaid Falcons.
Volleyball
The varsity volleyball team traveled to St. John’s to participate in the Houston Cup Tournament in their first game action of the season. The Lions went 1-1 on Friday afternoon defeating Awty International School (2-1) but falling to HVA Performance Club (0-2). Early Saturday, the team faced EHS and fell 1-2. This put the Lions in the Silver bracket for the remainder of their games. The Lions then cruised to three straight victories, defeating Ft. Worth Country Day (2-0), St. Stephen’s (2-0), and Houston Stars VBC (2-0) on their way to winning the Silver Bracket. This week the Lions travel to Greenhill for their first best of 5 match of the season and then host Casady in an important SPC counter game in the home opener on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
Cross Country
The varsity cross country team enjoyed another very successful race this past Saturday. The Southlake XC Invitational is one of the best early season meets in the state attracting teams from all over the state as well as some out of state teams. The top runners for St. Mark’s ran in the Elite Race. Once again, they ran a very competitive race and finished 9thout of 35 teams, 2 of which were from out of state. The team was led by Pablo Arroyo who finished 13th in a time of 16:17. Andres Arroyo finished right behind in 14th with the same time of 16:17. They were followed by Sohil Dodda, Tyler Nussbaumer, Julian Ivarra, and Zach Lightfoot. This week the team is off and then they will race in the highly competitive Lovejoy XC Fall Festival on September 21.
