Lion Sports Update 04/23
Baseball
The varsity baseball team traveled to Fort Worth on Tuesday to take on the SPC North Zone top-seed Fort Worth Country Day. Several errors on routine plays early in the ballgame gave the opposition a head start in the contest. Senior Cole Arnett tried to limit the damage on the mound, but he eventually turned the game over to sophomores Jake Daniels and Alex Zuch. Hot-hitting senior Jack Rocchio collected two doubles while sophomore Daniel Sanchez added a double of his own to provide St. Mark’s with a few offensive sparks in the Lions’ road loss (SM 3 – FWCD 13). Thursday’s home contest vs. Casady was rained out and rescheduled for this Tuesday at 4:00. This will serve as Senior Appreciation Day for our team, and the player/family introductions will begin around 3:40. The Lions will conclude counter play this Friday in a home match against Oakridge.
Tennis
On Tuesday, April 16, the varsity tennis team headed to Ft Worth to take on Ft Worth Country Day school. Due to conflicts, injuries, and illnesses, the team was missing six of its members. Sophomore Max Palys rose to the challenge playing at the #1 singles spot and defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-0 by hitting incredible serves and forehands. Freshman Alex Ryan stepped up to the plate at line 2 singles and won 6-0, 6-1, controlling the match from start to finish. Freshman Ekansh Tambe, having just come off of winning the consolation draw at his last tournament, played at line 3 singles, losing only 5 points in the second set to win the match 6-0, 6-0. Line 1 doubles consisted of the familiar duo of seniors Adnan Khan and Matthew Pollock. They had a slow start in the first set, but played tough in the wind and turned things around in the second set, defeating their opponents 6-3, 6-0. The line 2 doubles team of seniors Samir Rattakonda and Rhys Arana played aggressively from start to end defeating their opponents 6-3, 6-1. The Lions won the match 5-0 and are now 4-1 in SPC North Zone play. This week, the Lions host a pair of SPC counter matches as they face Casady on Tuesday (a rain makeup from last week) and Oakridge on Friday.
Water Polo
The varsity water polo team had the week off, but the JV water polo team competed in the North Region JV Championships at the Keller Natatorium on Friday and Saturday. In the first game, the Lions played Flower Mound Silver. Winning this game was the only way to place in the top four, and be able to fight for the title. Our boys played extremely well and won the game 15-3. In the semifinal, St. Mark’s faced Denton Guyer HS, the team that just beat the Lions 1-4 a couple a weeks ago. This time our boys took revenge and won convincingly 12-6. This victory earned St. Mark’s a spot in the Championship game against Flower Mound Navy. In their previous meeting this year, Flower Mound Navy beat the Lions 2-4, so this game presented a well-deserved re-match. The game started very balanced, a tough fight. The first period ended up scoreless, and the first goal of the game was scored in the middle of the second period. From there on the game opened up and it was clear that the Lions were the better squad on this day. In the end, St. Mark’s emerged victorious, winning the game 8-4. This victory gave our St. Mark’s their 8th straight JV Championship Title.
Cross Country
Last Thursday, April 18, the Lions competed in the SPC North Zone Meet at Greenhill. On a clear, warm day, with excessive winds, the Lions came to compete. Sophomore Kit Colson led the team with wins in the 100m and 200m, anchoring the winning 4 x 400 relay team and 2nd place 4 x 100 relay team. The distance runners once again impressed with their competitiveness and grit. The winds may have slowed their times, but not their effort. The trio of junior Pablo Arroyo, junior Andres Arroyo, and senior Seth Weprin finished 2,3,4 in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m. The 3200m saw Seth and Pablo run to PRs and move up the SPC depth ladder. Freshman Enoch Ellis and sophomore Colin Bajec enjoyed success in both hurdle races. Senior John Harbison once again led the throwers with victories in the Shot Put and Discus. This week, St. Mark’s co-hosts the Navy-Green Quad Meet with Greenhill, Hockaday, and ESD. On Friday afternoon, Greenhill hosts the field events and 4x800R. St. Mark’s will host the schools on Saturday with the rest of the running events.
Golf
The varsity golf team had its events from last week rained out. They have a Senior Appreciation event with Hockaday on Wednesday, April 25 at Brookhaven Country Club and then they are off to the SPC Championships at Woodbridge Golf Club in The Woodlands on April 29-30.
ALUMNI ATHLETES
Sam Clayman ’17 and the Princeton Tigers Men’s Golf team won the Ivy League Championship this past weekend. The Tigers edged out Columbia by a single stroke and Yale by just two strokes. Sam birdied 2 of the last 4 holes and sunk a 12-foot putt for par on the 18th hole that clinched the championship for his team. Clayman finished tied for 3rd in the tournament and was named All-Ivy League for his efforts. You can read more about it here.
Parker Dixon ’16, a junior Outside Hitter for the Princeton Tigers Men’s Volleyball team, helped his team to the EIVA Championship this past weekend. The Tigers beat Penn State in a thrilling 5 set match that ended with a 15-13 win in the 5th set. Parker had 15 kills in the match with a 0.489 attack percentage and was named to the EIVA All-Tournament team. The victory earns the Tigers a date with Barton College on April 25th in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. You can find out more here.

The varsity lacrosse team faced Allen last Thursday evening. The game was very defensive early on, with the score knotted at 1 at the half. Defensively, senior Blake Rogers locked up Allen’s top scorer and held him to just 1 goal for the game, senior Jonathan Taylor drew the assignment of Allen’s top facilitator and held him to just 1 assist for the game, and senior Davis Malouf made several crucial off-ball defensive plays that thwarted Allen scoring chances. The Lions broke the game open in the 3rd quarter with a 5-goal run that was sparked by goals from seniors Parker Clark, Connor Cheetham, and Ryan McCord and 2 goals from junior Titus McGowan. However, Allen would not go away. They went on a 3 goal run of their own to close the score to 6-4 early in the 4th quarter. Parker Clark then added two more goals to complete his hat trick and put the game away for the Lions. Final score: St. Mark’s 8 – Allen 4. Lyle Ochs added 3 assists and John Burton was 11 for 16 at the faceoff X in the win. The Lions remain undefeated in the THSLL North District East Division and will face the only other undefeated team, the Highland Park Scots, on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Highlander Stadium.

Reece Rabin ’18, a pitcher for the Princeton Tigers Men’s Baseball team, picked up his second win of the season for the Tigers as they defeated Rider University. Reece threw 5 innings of shutout baseball, scattering 4 hits, issuing no walks, and striking out 5 in the effort. You can see a post-game interview with Reece here.
