Lion Sports Update 11/02

The Varsity Football team played its first game of the season this past Friday night. In front of only team parents and senior students from St. Mark’s, the Lions hosted ESD in what is the only home game this season. The Eagles struck first on a pass to the back of the endzone. The Lions answered when junior Alex Nadalini found senior Connor Gaffney for a 10-yard TD in the second quarter to tie the score. An interception return for a TD gave ESD the lead at the half. The Lions defense played very tough, limiting an ESD offense that was averaging 38-points/game to just 15-points on the night, but the young Lions were unable to mount a comeback in the second half, eventually falling 7-21. This week, the Lions travel to Greenhill on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Varsity Volleyball team traveled to Trinity Valley on Tuesday. In an attempt to avenge the team’s only loss of this abbreviated season, the Lions came out hitting on all cylinders. Behind big hitting from Tristan Doan, Daniel Sanchez, Miller Trubey, and Will Shoup, as well as strong defense anchored by Cooper Ribman and George Warren, the Lions won the match in convincing fashion 3-1 (25-13, 19-25, 25-19, 25-13). This week, the Lions host FWCD on Tuesday, at 5:00 p.m. and Greenhill on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. (Senior Night). These matches will be livestreamed on the St. Mark’s Athletics YouTube page by clicking here at the start time of the match.

The Varsity Cross Country team participated in the SPC North #2 series this past Saturday, October 31, at the Athletic Performance Ranch in south Fort Worth. This week there were only four teams competing: St. Mark’s, Greenhill, Ft. Worth Country Day, and ESD. The Lions were again victorious with a team score of 20 points. Leading the way was Sahil Dodda (1st), Raja Mehendale (2nd), and Julian Ivarra (4th). Parker Steinbrueck, Clark Cooper, Asa McCaleb, and Zach Lightfoot all finished in the Top 10! The Lions have two more weeks left in the season with competitions on November 7 and 14, all at the Athletic Performance Ranch at 11:00 a.m.

The Varsity Fencing team will have its season-ending intra-squad competition this Friday at 4:00 p.m. in Spencer Gym. While no spectators can attend, the competition will be livestreamed on St. Mark’s Athletics YouTube page.
