8 lane Tartan surface is very fast. The Long/High Jump and Pole Vault are the same surface. The Shot Put and Discus are brushed concrete. Javelin runway is grass.

    Meet Director 

    USATF CE Committee Member
    John has been coaching for 38 years. As a collegiate coach, he produced 68 All-America’s, 9 NCAA Champions, 4 Collegiate Record Holders, 2 USATF National Champions, 7 Olympic Trials Qualifiers, and 1 Olympian. Now, at the High School and Private Level, he has enjoyed the same success.  Recently, In 2015, he coached the Junior National Heptathlon Champion.  In 2016, he coached 2 women to the Olympic Trials in the Heptathlon.  He is a USATF Level III, IAAF Level 5 Certified Coach in the Combined Events. He has a Master’s Degree in Biomechanics and has authored a book on the javelin.  He has served on various USA Senior and Junior National Team Staffs since 2005.  He has been at St. Mark’s School of Texas for 25 years and is the founder of the TEXAS GREATEST ATHLETE CE MEET.
  • Richie Mercado

    Junior’s/High School Program Coordinator

    Richie has been coaching at St. John’s (Houston) for 34 years and works with local club and junior sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, throwers, and vaulters during that time. A former decathlete at Univ. of Virginia, he is also a USATF Level III, IAAF Level 5 Certified Coach in the jumps and combined events and a frequent Level I Instructor in biomechanics, jumps and throws. He has served as an instructor for the Women’s Jr. Elite Horizontal Jumps Camp. He has also worked with several national class junior athletes in the horizontal jumps, pole vault, heptathlon, and coached the top high school decathlete and 2015 Pan Am Jr. Silver medalist. He has served on US Junior and Senior international staffs as a coach and manager.

    Combined Events Coordinator

    Currently John is the Head Track Coach Eaglecrest High School in Colorado. John has been coaching at the collegiate and high school level for 44 years. His Aurora H. S. boys’ and girls’ team have won 6 Colorado State titles total. His Eaglecrest H. S. teams have finished in the top 5 in the state 6 times. He has coached 24 individual State Champions, 2 National Champions, and 3 top-10 finishers at the World Junior Meet. John has had the opportunity to be associated with over 16 International meets as a Coach, Manager, Team Leader for USATF. He is currently the USATF Development Chair for the Heptathlon and Decathlon as well as the overall Development Chair for Men’s Track and Field.
  • Sue Humphrey

    Elite Coach
    Sue was the 2004 Head Women’s Olympic Coach and has received the Nike Coach of the Year Award. She has had several years of experience coaching elite, collegiate, and high school athletes; including Charles Austin, the 1996 Olympic Gold medalist in the high jump. She is the only female coach to have NCAA champions in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. She has coached at The University of Texas, Cal State Long Beach & Arizona State University.  Sue currently is the field event coach at St. Stephen’s Episcopal High School (Austin, TX).  She holds USATF Level 2 certification in sprints/hurdles/relays.
