The Red Barr Award

The Red Barr Award is presented to a senior who has demonstrated the ideals by which Red Barr lived: patience, understanding, sportsmanship, and dedication to excellence in the classroom as well as on the playing field.

The award is selected by the varsity coaches and awarded by the Athletic Director.

Blake Hudspeth ’21

When you reflect upon the many impressive accomplishments and contributions of the Class of 2021, there is a particular student-athlete that comes to mind who has truly gone above and beyond to ensure that this year was a special and meaningful one for his fellow students. Blake Hudspeth has been a consummate student-athlete in every way possible and has defined what it means to be a Markman. Dedicated, hard-working, kind, genuine, and motivated are just some of the words that could be used to describe this outstanding young man whose leadership has influenced so many different people at our School. One of his strongest qualities is how much he cares about others and that has been evident through his exceptional citizenship.
Blake has had tremendous success as a member of the crew team and served as the Team Captain this past year leading the Varsity Quad to a Central District Championship. His strong character and passion for rowing are evident at every crew practice and competition where he constantly encourages and supports his fellow teammates with a motivational and positive tone. He humbly leads by example, and his numerous accolades and accomplishments have certainly set a high bar for future crew student-athletes.
Beyond his numerous athletic achievements, Blake is a phenomenal student who is highly regarded by his teachers. His stellar work in the classroom is even more impressive given all of his significant commitments to extracurricular activities. This past year, he served as Class President and has been quick to spearhead many of the major events and projects on our campus. Blake has gracefully balanced his many responsibilities here at St. Mark’s, and his commitment to excellence has been a shining example to other students. We are so proud of his countless contributions to both our School and its athletics program and are very excited for the bright future ahead of him as a crew student-athlete at MIT.
Coach Pitts Yandell fondly reflects on his time with Blake over the past four years:
“Blake is the consummate sportsman whose character and finest qualities guide him through life.  Whether it is through academics, sport or Student Council, Blake exudes dedication to himself and his peers.”
