The Lee S. Smith ’65 Courage & Honor Award
This year, the Alumni Board unveiled a new signature award that will be presented at future Spring Alumni Dinners: The Lee S. Smith ’65 Courage & Honor Award. Its purpose is to reflect the values we seek to instill in every Marksman who steps foot onto this campus and will “recognize a member of the St. Mark’s community who demonstrates courage, honor, perseverance, and or justice, in the communities to which they belong by using their voice and actions to affect measurable change to elevate humanity.”
As important as the new award is, which will be presented to fitting recipient for the first time at next year’s Spring Alumni Dinner, is the graduate whose name will be forever linked to these aspirational virtues. In 1963, Lee Smith entered St. Mark’s as a Senior, becoming the first Black student to become a Marksman – and a Marksman he is, through and through.
