St. Mark’s Named Top Photo Program

For the fourteenth time in fifteen years, St. Mark’s Photography has been named the “Top Program” by the Association of Texas Photography Instructors. The “Top Program” award is given by a panel of six judges who evaluate and rank portfolio submissions from both public and private schools. Schools submit three, ten-image portfolios in various categories and are awarded points by the panel. This year, St. Mark’s submitted portfolios in commercial/advertising, portrait, and still-life categories.

“There’s a lot of pressure that comes along with continuing the streak, but there’s also a sense of satisfaction from knowing that the effort the seniors and Mr. Hunt put in to teach the underclassmen is paying off,” said Jerry Zhao ’21. “You can’t win Top Program by yourself, and it requires good work across the board from everyone.”

“The process that has allowed us to continue winning this title has honestly been the most enjoyable part of taking this class; this award simply honors our efforts,” said Evan Lai ’22.

“Winning Top Program repeatedly has become an interesting rally point for photography students past and present,” said Scott Hunt, Arnold E. Holtberg Master Teaching Chair and St. Mark's Photography Instructor. “Alumni regularly reach out throughout the year and inevitably they ask how our Top Program chances are looking. There’s something awfully gratifying to hear current students admire and be inspired by the photographs of former Marksmen and to have two decades of exceptional student art to draw upon.”

Students whose work was represented in this year’s submission include Jerry Zhao ’21, Blake Hudspeth ’21, Luke Voorheis ’21, Collin Katz ’21, Evan Lai ’22, Evan McGowan ’22, Anashay Monga ’22, Paul Valois ’22, Drake Elliot ’22, Owen Simon ’22, Ekansh Tambe ’22, Nicolas Gomez ’22, Renil Gupta ’23, and Hudson Brown ’24.
