Dear Parents and Campers:

In 1986 I was asked to help run the St. Mark’s Summer Camps program. I thought it would be an interesting thing to do for a year or two. At that time, my twin sons were barely old enough to attend the Day Camp. Now, it’s been more than 20 years – my sons are both college graduates – and I’m still at it. Why? That’s simple, it’s the Campers!

Through the years many things have changed, and this year St. Mark’s itself is experiencing change. Those of you who have visited campus lately know this is a time of great physical change. We are in the process of building our new Centennial Hall – a building that will replace the oldest building on our campus, the venerable Wirt Davis Hall. This project will have an unavoidable and unfortunate effect on our camp programs this summer.

Due to extensive construction work, we unfortunately will be unable to safely operate our Day Camp program. I have worked long and hard to find a way – any way – to make our full camp program work this summer. Sadly, it simply cannot be done. The risks are too high – we cannot and will not endanger anyone, no matter how noble the cause.

This year we will offer our well-known Sports Skills Camps and our most popular and exciting Science Camps! All of these camps are located in safe, camper-friendly, “construction-free zones.” The safety of the campers and staff is the first and foremost concern of everyone associated with the St. Mark’s Summer Camps program. With construction completed, we will offer our full schedule of camps in 2009.

St. Mark’s Summer Camps may be “under construction” this summer, but we are still the “Best Camps in the Land”! Won’t you come join us this summer? The joy – and learning – are here for all to share.

Sincerely yours,
Stephanie Barta
Director of Summer Camps
