Volleyball Wins SPC

This past weekend was the SPC Championships for fall sports which was hosted by the SPC schools here in Dallas. The Varsity Volleyball team went into the SPC tournament as the #1 seed in the North Zone and matched up in the first round against St. Mary’s Hall from San Antonio. In a match where every single player contributed to the cause, the Lions won convincingly in 3 games (25-13, 25-12, 25-15).  In the semifinal match against Greenhill, the tournament host school, the Lions were pushed harder but were still able to win the match in 3 games (25-15, 28-26, 25-22). In the SPC Finals, the Lions went up against a Casady team that was playing very well. In the two regular season counter matches, the Lions beat Casady in 4 games both times, which gave Casady plenty of motivation to play well in the SPC Finals. The Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead (25-12) by playing nearly error free in game 1. Casady showed resilience and evened the score 1-1, squeaking by the Lions 26-24. The Lions regrouped and once again dominated game 3 (25-11), only to let Casady climb back in the match with a narrow 25-22 win in game 4. In the 5th and deciding game of the championship, both teams felt the pressure of the moment.  The game went back and forth, and Cyclones took a 7-6 lead early on. The Lions responded with a small run that gave them a 14-11 lead and 2 championship points. The Cyclones wouldn’t give up so easily, winning the next 3 points and tying the game at 14-14.  After the two teams exchanged points, the Lions pulled off the win on two straight points to end the match! This was the volleyball team’s 3rd straight SPC title and the 4th in 6 years (’09, ’12, ’13, & ’14).

The Varsity Cross Country Team finished 3rd at the SPC Championships this past weekend.  Coming in as the defending champions, the Lions runners had targets on their back.  It was a beautiful day on a very demanding course that saw many outstanding performances. Unfortunately, the Lions came up a little short and were unable to defend last year’s title. JT Graass ’16 was again out top runner with a time of 16:34 and finishing 3rd overall.  Daniel Cope ’17 ran a lifetime best of 16:38 and finished 5th. Nick Buckenham ’15 ran a course PR of 16:52 to finish 7th. Nolan Jenevein ’17 ran a huge PR of 17:46 to finish 33rd.  Rounding off the top five was Shourya Kumar ’15 who ran 18:04 and finished 47th. Also turning in notable times were Scott Smythe ’17 in 18:12 and Sam Shane ’18 in 18:19.
