Lions Win Big

LACROSSE
The Varsity Lacrosse team celebrated its 20th season as a St. Mark's varsity sport by winning its first ever Texas High School Lacrosse League Division I State Championship! The group of nine seniors on the team, who had already won four SPC Lacrosse Championships and earned four straight appearances to the THSLL Final Four, wanted to make sure that Coach Hayward Lee's 5th trip to the state finals would end differently. In the semi-final game on Saturday against top seed Highland Park, the Lions earned an 8-4 victory, before defeating SPC-rival ESD in a riveting overtime championship game, by a score of 8-7 to secure the title.

WATER POLO
The Water Polo team finished its season with a 3rd place finish at the Texas State High School Water Polo Championships.  The team beat Clear Springs (19-5) and Lamar (19-8) on Friday to advance to the Final Four.  On Saturday, the team matched up against Clear Creek, who was widely considered the toughest challenge in the quest for the Championship.  They proved a worthy adversary and the Lions fell short 8-9 in the semifinals.  Later that day in the 3rd place game, the team used what energy it had left to make a statement against Tomball, beating them 24-5.  Senior Warren Smith was name the TISCA "Dennis Fosdick" MVP, given to the best player in the state.  He is the first Marksman to receive this honor.  Jack Mallick ’14 and Timothy Simenc ’15 were also named to the First Team All-State. Bradley Mankoff ’14 was named Second Team All-State, and Nathan Ondracek ’15 and Otto Clark-Martinek ’13 were named Honorable Mention All-State.

TENNIS
The Tennis team went to the SPC Championships as the #2 seed from the North Zone.  In the first round, they matched up against St. Andrew’s (Austin) who was the #3 seed from the South Zone.  The Lions won in dominant fashion by a score of 5-0.  In the second round, the team faced the #1 seeded Kinkaid (Houston) who were also the defending SPC Champions.  In an epic battle between two very evenly matched teams, the Lions fell just short, losing by a score of 2-3.  The team bounced back nicely on Saturday against the South #2 seeded St. John’s Mavericks by winning the match 3-2, and finished in 3rd place in the SPC Division 1 championships.

TRACK & FIELD
The 2013 Track & Field team finished third in the team standings.  “It was the toughest competition I have ever seen at this meet,” said Head Coach John Turek.  There were 17 events during the course of the meet, and quite impressively, 17 out of 21 St. Mark’s athletes equaled or bettered their personal record at the biggest meet of the year.  There was also a total of 22 personal records for Marksmen, and five athletes earned 8 ALL-SPC awards.  Senior Kendrick Spraglin scored 42 points by himself!  It was a good and respectable finish to the season.

BASEBALL
The Varsity Baseball team entered the SPC Tournament this year as the #4 seed from the North Zone, having finished the counter season with a 6-3 record. The first game was against the #1 South Zone team, the Kinkaid Falcons. It was a hard fought game, but the team came up a touch short and lost, 5-0. Game 2 was a rematch against our perennial local foe, ESD. Brandon Stetler dazzled on the mound, and we added 13 hits to the mix to secure a 7-3 victory.  The Lions were then pitted against All Saints, the number one seed from the north zone, for our final game on Saturday morning.  All Saints got off to a fast start, and while the Lions scraped their way back into the game, they were never able to catch up with them. The Lions fell, 13-3, in five innings, and finished in 6th place in the SPC Division 1 tournament.
