Lions Sports Update 12/08

The Varsity Swim team swam in an inter-squad time trial on Tuesday and then in the SM Invite on Thursday (over 150 swimmers). Neither of the meets were scored.  The Lions swimmers posted best times (personal records) in over 80% of the races in both meets.  They will swim against Cistercian on Tuesday, December 9, and then go on the road to Frisco for the TISCA 5A meet on Friday and Saturday.

The Varsity Wrestling team competed in the “Rumble at the Rock” tournament in Rockwall this past Saturday.  Justin Jones ’15 finished 2nd in his weight class and was the top finisher for St. Mark’s.  This week, the wrestlers will host the Lone Star Pool Tournament here on Saturday in the Spencer Gym.

The Varsity Soccer team played two matches last week against Prestonwood Christian and Kinkaid (Houston).  Both matches saw St. Mark’s dominate possession.  Against Prestonwood on Monday, a goal by Arjun Singh ’18 from a diagnon pass by Ben Wilner ’15 five minutes before halftime gave the Lions a well-deserved halftime lead. PCA created several counter-attack opportunities in the second half before Walter Johnson ’15, with an assist from Scott Smythe ’17, secured the victory four minutes from full-time.  Final score: 2-0.  Strong defensive play from Hilario Vargas ’15, Sam Dockery ’15, Michael Fletcher ’15, and Graham Gillespie ’16 helped goalkeepers Sam Eichenwald ’16 and John Landry ’16 preserve the shutout.  Then on Thursday evening, St. Mark’s and Kinkaid battled to a scoreless draw. The Lions seemed to control the time of possession; however, a very well-organized and disciplined Kinkaid  team proved too difficult to break down.  For the season, the Lions have six wins, one draw, and one loss. Their metal will be tested as the play to SPC opponents this week, ESD and ASES.

The Varsity Basketball team competed in the Prosper HS Tournament this past weekend.  The tournament featured 12 teams, many of which are some of the best large public schools in the area.  In the first game on Thursday, the Lions beat McKinney North by a score of 51-44.  The Lions then fell to Flower Mound HS and Marcus HS in subsequent games Friday night and Saturday morning.  In the final game of the tournament, St. Mark’s went down early to Richardson High but battled back in the fourth quarter. The Eagles proved too much to handle, eventually beating the Marksmen 55-39. The Lions look to rebound this week against Faith Family at home in the “Lion’s Den,” Tuesday, Dec. 9th at 7:30 pm.
