Lions Sports Update 09/17

Football
The Varsity Football team traveled to Ft. Worth Country Day on September 12.  In a high scoring affair, the Lions struck first when RB Justin Jones ’15 took a screen pass from QB Hyer Thomas ’17 and rambled 61 yards for a touchdown.  The Falcons answered with a TD of their own shortly after, but the Lions would regain the lead on a hand-sweep to William Caldwell ’16 who ran it in from 3 yards out.  The two teams both found pay dirt twice in the 2nd quarter (Jones rush, Caldwell receiving), and the Lions took a 28-21 lead into the intermission.  The 3rd and 4th quarters belonged to the Lions’ defense as they stymied the Falcon’s offense, allowing zero points in the second half.  Justin Jones led the Lions in offense, rushing for 173 yards and 2 TDs and catching 2 passes for 66 yards and another TD.  Hyer Thomas, in his second start, threw for 231 yards and 3 TDs, and a foursome of WRs (Caldwell, Andrew Patison ‘15, Case Brabham ‘15, and Rish Basu ’17) combined for 14 catches and 165 yards.  The Lions will host last year’s SPC Small School Champions, All Saints Episcopal, here in the Norma and Lamar Hunt Stadium this Friday, September 19 at 7 pm.

Volleyball
The Varsity Volleyball team traveled to Greenhill in a rematch of the previous weekend’s two finalists from the Houston Cup Tournament.  While the Lions did drop their first game of the regular season, they still pulled off the victory 3 games to 1.  They will play again September 16 vs. Texas Boys Volleyball Association at 6 pm in the Hicks Family Gymnasium.  The team will travel to San Antonio for their final mid-season tournament at St. Mary’s Hall on September 19 and 20.

Cross Country
The Varsity Cross Country team will run in the Keller Invitational on September 19 and 20.  The races start at 8 am and will be run at Indian Springs Middle School in Keller.
