Lions Sports Update 09/01

Football
The Varsity Football team traveled to Cistercian to take on the only other all-boys school in the SPC on Friday night. This was a non-conference game as Cistercian is currently in the south zone rotation. The Lions struck first when Matthew Placide ’15 connected with William Caldwell ‘16 for a 21-yard TD. The Hawks answered quickly with a touchdown pass of their own. In the second quarter, the Lions again went up by 7 points on a TD run by Eli Ware ’17, but Cistercian again tied the score with a TD run. The score was 14-14 at half time. In the second half, the Hawks started the scoring with a TD pass, then scored on a safety. Down 9, the Lions capitalized when Luke Rogers ’17 forced a Hawk fumble which was recovered by Tim Skapek ’16 to score a quick TD (2 point conversion unsuccessful). On the final drive of the 3rd quarter, Cistercian ran another one in for a TD. Lions 20 – Cistercian 30 at the end of 3 quarters. After stopping the Lions on their first drive of the 4th quarter, the Hawks moved the ball into Lions territory and kicked a 26-yard FG. Now down 13 points with under 8 minutes to play, the Lions had little room for error. After a long drive was capped off by a Placide TD run, the Lions pinned the Hawks deep on the ensuing kickoff. The defense got stingy and forced a punt deep in Cistercian territory. A few more clutch plays, capped off by another Placide to Caldwell TD and a Grant Brooks ’17 extra point (his 4th of the game), gave the Lions a 34-33 lead that would stand as the final score. Placide ended the game with 189 yards passing and 2 TDs, Eli Ware had 60 yards rushing and 1 TD, and Caldwell caught 8 passes for 114 yards and 2 TDs. Next up: the home opener against ESD, Friday, September 4, at 7:00 p.m.

Cross Country
The Varsity Cross Country team competed in the Marcus I Invitational on Saturday morning. It was a very large meet with some of the best teams in Texas and Oklahoma participating. St. Mark’s ran a Varsity team in the Elite Division and the results were outstanding. JT Graass ’16 led the team with a 9th place finish in a time of 15:56! His time places him among the top 50 runners in the state and also places him on the St. Mark’s ALL-TME CC list. Right behind him was Daniel Cope ‘17 who finished in 16th place with a time of 16:12. His time also ranks him very high in Texas and places him on the St. Mark’s ALL-TIME list as well. Finishing off the top 7 runners were Freshman Seth Weprin in 92nd place, Junior Scott Smythe in 118th, Sophomore Sam Shane in 127th, Junior Nolan Jenevein in 135th, and Senior Alex Sanchez in 165th. There were 224 runners in the race. The team finished 12th overall out of 31 teams.
The Varsity “B” team and JV Team also performed well in the same meet. The team runs again in the Southlake Carroll Invitational at Meadowmere Park in Grapevine this Saturday at 7:30 a.m.
