Lacrosse
The Varsity Lacrosse team played two games last week. On Wednesday, they traveled to Plano’s Clark Stadium to take on Plano West. The Lions’ defense was stout and allowed only 2 goals all game, anchored by goalie Connor Mullen ’15. The Lions prevailed by a score of 8-2. Then on Friday, the Lions traveled to ESD to play an SPC counter match. The Lions got behind early and were never able to get into the flow of the game. The Eagles ended up winning the game 19-6. The Lions travel to FWCD tonight (Monday) and then host Jesuit on Wednesday.

Tennis
The Varsity Tennis team traveled to Ft. Worth last Thursday and defeated All Saints by a 4-1 score in its first SPC counter match. Winning matches for the Lions were juniors Albert Thieu ’16 and Will Garden ’16, sophomores Frank Thomas and Gopal Raman, and freshmen Harris Wilson and Davis Bailey. Earlier in the week, the team participated in the Jesuit Invitational, along with Greenhill, Highland Park, and the host school. Juniors Anvit Reddy ’16 and Albert Thieu ’16 won two matches and finished 3rd in the doubles draw, while junior Will Hardage ’16 finished 4th in singles competition. This week, the Lions will host three non-counters: Jesuit on Tuesday, Parish on Thursday, and ESD on Friday.

Baseball
The Varsity Baseball team finally had some good weather so they could play their first game last week. They hosted THESA who is a home school organization that puts together a select team. Despite missing several key players and having not had very many outdoor practices, the Lions played well defensively and kept the game close. Unfortunately, THESA’s pitching proved too much for the Lion’s bats and the Lions lost 0-4. The first conference game was scheduled for Friday, but it was also rained out. This week the team will take on HSAA on Tuesday at home and then travel to All Saints on Wednesday for the first SPC counter game.

Track & Field
The Varsity Track & Field Team has been very busy since the Spring Break. On Thursday, March 12, the team traveled to Liberty Christian School in Argyle to compete in the Bubba Joiner Invitational. Competing with half the team, the Varsity Team finished 4th out of 10 schools and the Junior Varsity finished 5th out of 10 teams. Some highlights were JT Graass ’16 winning the 800m and Chris Carter ’16 winning the 3200m. On Saturday, March 14, a small group of distance runners participated in the Texas Distance Festival at Southlake Carroll HS. The highlight was JT Graass finishing in a very close 2nd in the 1600m. His time of 4:22.8 is the 3rd fastest time in school history!  It is also one of the top 10 times in Texas this season!  This past Saturday, the team hosted the 19th Annual Bradley V. Urschel Invitational. The Lions were victorious in amassing 201 points during the meet. Some of the highlights included wins by JT Graass in the 800m, Nick Buckenham ’15 in the 1600m, Keith Kadesky ’17 in the Pole Vault, the 4 x 400 Relay team (Daniel Garcia ’18, Nico Sanchez ’16, Eric Rawot ’15, JT Graass ’16), and the 4 x 800 Relay Team (Nick Buckenham ’15, Daniel Cope ’17, Chris Carter ’15, JT Graass ’16) which set a new meet record! Many, many athletes established new PR’s (Personal Records) during the meet. On Friday, during the Middle School portion of the BVU, Eric Martin ’19 established a new meet and school record in the discus (1K) with a throw of 142’ 9.5”. That mark broke a 42 year-old mark set by Hal Urschel ’77. He also set a BVU meet record of 46’ 8” in the shot put (4K). Next up for the Lions is Texas Relays and Parish Episcopal 4-way meet. JT Graass will represent St. Mark’s at the Texas Relays in the Invitational 1600m. Water Polo
The Varsity Water Polo team played this weekend in the Charles Dutton Memorial Tournament at the Southlake Carroll Aquatic Center. This was an Open Men’s tournament. On Saturday they played two games, beating Thunder Silver 16-6 and then beating Thunder Masters 18-9. On Sunday, the Lions played their last pool play game against the other undefeated team in the tournament, HOPS (Houston). After a very intense game, the Lions won 12 – 11, and qualified for the Final 4. In the Semi-Final game, the Lions defeated Thunder Black, 9 – 8. In the Championship Game, the Lions faced the Dallas Water Polo Club (DWPC). This was a great game between two very strong teams. The DWPC had four St. Mark’s Alumni and two St. Mark’s assistant coaches on their roster. With 4 minutes left in the game, SM was up 11-7, but the lack of concentration allowed the DWPC to score 4 goals in just over 3 minutes and bring the score to 11-11. A last SM chance was denied by the former SM goalie, Aditya Sureddi ’13. After a nail-biting shoot-out, SM won 18-17. In the second round of the shoot-out, George Lin blocked the shot of former SM player Houston Hall. The winning goal was scored by Vignesh Babu ’15 Our team has participated in the Dutton Tournament for the last 15 years, but this is the first time the Lions have won this prestigious tournament played annually since 1988.
