Lions Sports Update 01/30

The Varsity wrestling team competed in the first edition of the Texas Independent School Dual State Championships.  Despite forfeiting four weight classes due to injuries, SAT testing, and other school commitments, the team battled to a 3-2 record and a 7th place finish.  The highlights of the weekend include Justin Jones ‘15 perfect 5-0 record, and Alex Munoz ‘14 and Tommy Gudmundsson ’15 earning their first varsity wins where Alex dominated his opponent from Veritas Academy for an 11-4 victory and Tommy came from behind to earn a pin against First Baptist Academy.  Arguably the best match of the day was contested between Zach Papin ‘14 and Casey Cowan from Kinkaid when Zach wrestled up a weight class to challenge the former National Prep All-American.  While Zach dropped a controversial 6-5 decision, his move up allowed a younger teammate to accept a forfeit at 138 lbs. and ultimately secured the team win as we only sacrificed three team points (as opposed to six points for a fall) and defeated Kinkaid by a final score of 36-33.  The boys will be traveling to Houston to compete in the independent school state tournament at Episcopal High School on Friday, January 31 and Saturday, February 1.  The Wrestling coaching staff wants to express a special thanks to super fan Joe Milliet for his unwavering support of the program.

The wrestling team also finished forth overall in Texas Prep State. Standout wrestlers included Blake Spangler ’15 (4th place), Zack Papin ’15 (1st place), and Justin Jones ’15 (1st place).

The Varsity Basketball team played just one counter game last week against All Saints from Ft. Worth.  The Lions took their first conference loss in this game by a score of 54-65.  They will look to rebound this week with two home conference games against Greenhill (Tuesday, January 28 at 6:00 p.m.) and ESD (Friday, January 31 at 7:30 p.m.).  Both games will have a huge impact on the conference standings and Friday’s game against ESD is guaranteed to be standing room only.

The Varsity Soccer team got back on track with a win at All Saints following their only conference loss of the season.  The team won 3-2 with the goals being scored by Jack Fojtasek ‘15 (x2) and Ben Wilner ‘15.  The Soccer team plays two conference counter games this week at home against Greenhill (Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.) and ESD (Friday at 6:00 p.m.).  Both games will be crucial in the conference standings.

The Varsity Swim team did not compete last week.  They swim again on Thursday, January 30 at St. Mark’s against Greenhill starting at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, January 25, 2014, the St. Mark's Middle School swim team traveled to the LISD Aquatic Center in The Colony to compete in the Metroplex Middle School Championships. The team took 1st place in the boys division and the relay team broke two meet records. 200 Yard Medley Relay (1:50.06) and 200 Yard Freestyle Relay (1:40.10): Ethan Pittson '18, Benjamin Hurst '18, Edward Ro '18, and Alan Jiang '18.
