Athletics Active Over Break

The Varsity Soccer team had a busy Christmas Break.  The squad played two non-conference opponents just after the new year, beating both Nolan Catholic (4-2) and Bishop Dunne (5-0).  The team also took down a feisty alumni squad on Saturday in the annual Alumni Game. After the Varsity team raced out to a commanding 5-0 halftime lead, the alumni battled back to make it a 5-4 game before the current team was able to shore up their defense and clinch the win. The soccer team plays a “friendly” home match today against Cistercian at 4:15 pm, and then opens its conference counter season against Trinity Valley at home this Friday at 6:30 pm.

The Varsity Basketball team played two games over break, beating a tough Bishop Lynch team by five points and Dallas Thunder by double figures.  The team also played the annual Alumni Game this past Saturday.  After a lopsided first half which the current players dominated, Coach Guiler (coaching the current team) and former assistant coach Robert Stokes ’74 (coaching the alumni team) decided to reset the score.  On the second go-round, the alumni team came to play and sent the game to OT on a three-pointer by Case Martin ’06 with only seconds left; however, the current players managed to prevail in the extra period.  The basketball team also opens its conference counter season at home this Friday against Trinity Valley at 7:30 pm.

The Varsity Wrestling team wrestled in the Allen Outlaw Tournament this past weekend.  Zach Papin ’14 took 2nd, Jimmy Papin ’13 took 3rd, and Andrew McClain ’15 took 7th.  The next events for the wrestlers are the Trinity Trojan Tournament and the THSCA Dual Tournament, both taking place this weekend.

The Varsity Swim team did not compete over the break.  They will next take to the pool against Cistercian and Bishop Lynch here this Thursday at 6:00 pm (diving at 5:00 pm).
