Lions Sports Update 09/22

LIONS SPORTS NEWS
The Varsity Football team hosted All Saints Episcopal on September 19. The Saints jumped out to an early lead, scoring 17 points in the first quarter. After a scoreless 2nd quarter, the Lions started their comeback in the 3rd quarter, scoring 2 TDs on Hyer Thomas ’17 passes to Elton McIntosh ’15 and Case Brabham ’15 and bringing the Lions within 4 points (13-17). The Lions defense played valiantly in the 4th quarter, but a rushing TD and a 100 yard interception return for a TD helped All Saints secure the win over the Lions by a score of 30-13. The Varsity Volleyball team traveled to San Antonio to play in the St. Mary’s Hall Invitational on Friday and Saturday. After going undefeated in pool play, the Lions stumbled against Greenhill in the tournament semi-finals, losing to the cross-town rivals for the first time since 2012. The Lions bounced back in the 3rd place match, beating Houston St. John’s. The team gets a shot at redemption against Greenhill tomorrow (Tuesday) here at St. Mark’s at 5:30 pm. They then travel to Oklahoma City on Friday to take on the Casady Cyclones in the first SPC counter match of the season.
 
The Varsity Cross Country team returned to action, participating in the Keller CC Classic. Racing in the 6A-5A race with much bigger schools, St. Mark’s finished 4th out of 15 teams. Leading St. Mark’s was JT Graass ’16 with a 4th place finish. Following him was Daniel Cope ‘17 in 8th place, Chris Carter ‘15 in 12th place, Shourya Kumar ‘15 in 39th place, and Nolan Jenevein ‘17 in 49th place. There were 105 runners in the race. This week, the Lions host the St. Mark’s invitational at Norbuck Park on Saturday, Sept. 27, starting at 9:00a. This meet will be a small preview of the SPC Championships with some of the stronger teams going head-to-head on the SPC Course.
 
 
ALUMNI SPORTS NEWS
Emmanuel Acho ’08 continues to make his mark on the Philadelphia Eagles. In 3 short weeks, he has gone from getting cut, to making the practice squad, to being promoted to the 53-man active roster, and then on Sunday, September 21, he earned his first start at Inside Linebacker for the Eagles in their rivalry game against the Washington Redskins. Manny recorded 3 tackles in the game and the Eagles won in OT. Both Emmanuel and his brother Sam Acho ’07 of the Arizona Cardinals have helped their respective teams to 3-0 starts. Kareem Itani ’13, a forward on the MIT soccer team, helped the Engineers to two wins. Scoring a goal in each game, Kareem is now 3rd on the team in points (7). MIT remains unbeaten on the season (4 wins, 0 losses, and 3 draws).
 
Matthew Brown ’14 led the TCU Cross Country team to a 4th place finish in the UT-Arlington Season Opener Cross Country Race on September 13. Matthew finished 19th overall and was the #1 runner for TCU with a time of 16:05 in the 5k race.
