Lion Sports Update 01/11

Basketball
Over the holiday break, the varsity basketball team competed in several non-conference contests. On Friday, December 16, the Lions hosted Canyon Creek Christian, a team that started the year 13-2. Senior Fabian Reyher turned in an 8-point first half that gave St. Mark’s a healthy lead and resulted in a 53-45 victory. The following day, the Marksmen traveled to Adamson. The Lions began the game slowly and, despite a late run that gave them a chance to pull out the win, ran out of time and lost by a narrow margin. Returning from the holidays, St. Mark’s hosted back-to-back-to-back games on December 29, 30, and 31. In the first of these contests, 20 or so alumni came home to put on quite a show. Trailing virtually the entire game, the alums got hot in the 5th quarter and won by 3. 2013 graduate Tre Walton paced the alumni as the only double-digit scorer. Two home school groups visited St. Mark’s the next two days. First up was DaCHSE, where Will Ingram ’17 scored an impressive 26 points, and Paxton Scott ’20 burst onto the scene with two made 3’s in his first action as a varsity player. However, DaCHSE used 11 made three-pointers to edge the Lions 68-62. The Lions ratcheted up the defense in the New Year’s Eve morning matchup against HSAA. Thanks to a quick start and strong showings from freshman Andrew Laczkowski (20 points) and junior Sam Sussman (12 points) the Lions finished 2016 with a 57-49 victory.  The team’s overall record is now 11-7.  Unfortunately, due to the icy weather last Friday night, the Lions were unable to play ESD in the first counter game of the year.  Check the school’s website for the release of that make up date (currently TBD).  This week, the Lions face FWCD (at home on Tuesday) and Greenhill (on the road on Friday).

Soccer
Leading into the holiday, The Varsity Soccer team lost to TAPPS powerhouse TCA 1-3.  Junior Arjun Singh‘s crisp, clinic finish was assisted by senior Jake Vaughn. The Lions then drew with Greenhill at Hockaday. While St. Mark’s created several chances to score, it was Hyer Thomas ’17 who pristinely and emphatically headed senior Nolan Jenevein’s adeptly placed corner into the back of the Hornets’ net to equalize with less than six minutes. During the holiday, St Mark’s played some excellent soccer in defeating the alumni 8-3. St. Mark’s completed the holiday with a 2-0 victory over a tough Home School side. While Seth Weprin ’19 and Scott Smythe ’17 both scored quality goals in each half, it was Jeremy Kerber ’18 in goal who proved to be the man of the match with his shot stopping ability. Just like basketball, the soccer match was postponed on Friday night due to extreme cold and ice.  It is rescheduled for Saturday, January 21, at 4:00 p.m.

Swimming
The varsity swim team hosted Bishop Lunch last Thursday. The boys swam well, winning the dual by a score of 133 to 37. This week, the team will travel to swim against a very good Highland Park team on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m.

Wrestling
The varsity wrestling team also had its tournament canceled last weekend. This Friday, the varsity wrestlers will host the St. Mark’s Winter Duals Tournament here in Spencer Gym at 5:00 p.m.

ALUMNI ATHLETE NEWS
Ty Montgomery ’11 and the Green Bay Packers took on the New York Giants this past Sunday in the Wild Card weekend of the NFL Playoffs.  Ty ran for 27 yards and caught 3 passes for 41 yards.  He appeared to have suffered a leg injury in the 2nd half of the game, but he came back in the game later so hopefully he will be alright.  Ty and Packers come to Dallas this Sunday to take on the Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs.

Jack Gordon ’15, a member of the Cornell University Men’s Basketball team, has played in 10 of the 15 games for the Big Red this season.  In his most recent game against Fisher College, Jack scored 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting (3 for 4 from 3-point range) and added an assist in 14 minutes of play.
