Lion Sports Update 12/13

Swimming
The varsity swim team sent 15 swimmers to the TISCA 5A swim meet. There were 32 male teams and 36 female teams from across North Texas, fielding a total of 700 swimmers. Swimming against teams that started their training in late August, our guys showed heart and determination and placed third overall. With only three weeks of training, our boys beat powerhouse teams like Highland Park, Frisco, Colleyville, and McKinney. The swim team has no competitions this week, but will be training hard.

Basketball
The varsity basketball team won a pair of home games last week. On Thursday, the Lions defeated Desoto Canterbury 48-39.  Freshman Andrew Laczkowski’s 15 points led the way, and junior Jimmy Rodriguez knocked down a crucial 3 pointer (the first of his varsity career!) late in the 4th quarter to help secure the win. On Friday, the Lions came out on fire against Shelton! Will Ingram ’17 scored 15 first-quarter points, and the team cruised to a comfortable victory. This week, St. Mark’s hosts 12-1 Canyon Creek Christian at 6:00 p.m. in Hicks Gym and then travels to Adamson for their final game (3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon) before the holiday break. All alums, be sure to mark your calendars for the Basketball Alumni Game in Hicks Gym on December 29 at 6:30pm.

Soccer
The varsity soccer team started the week with a canceled match against Cistercian due to unplayable fields. The day off seemed to do the Lions good as they finished the week with three consecutive victories. Thursday chilly night at Trinity Valley saw the Lions score two goals in the last four minutes to double their margin of victory. Late goals from seniors Leo Weiser and Gordon Gunn padded the lead established earlier from another senior duo of Hyer Thomas and Scott Smythe. Friday evening saw St. Mark’s host and defeat the Prestonwood Christian Academy team by a score of 4-0. Juniors Kabeer and Arjun Singh were first to finish before late goals from seniors Smythe and Weiser sealed the victory. On a Saturday, St. Mark’s and Casady used their benches extensively as the Lions prevailed 2-0. Hyer Thomas ’17 netted a goal for the third consecutive day while Arjun Singh ’18 converted a penalty on the final play of the match. Throughout the weekend, the steady goalkeeping of senior Jeremy Kerber and solid defending from seniors Grant Brooks, Corday Cruz, and Teddy Koudelka helped the Lions keep a clean sheet for 230 minutes. The Lions improved to 4 wins and 3 losses on the season but face their stiffest competition yet with TAPPS champion Trinity Christian Academy on Monday and last season’s North Zone Champion Greenhill (at Hockaday) on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.

Wrestling
The varsity wrestling team hosted the Lone Star Pool Tournament this past weekend. The tournament had 10 teams and around 150 wrestlers competing. Against tough competition, Eli Ware ’17 was the only Marksman to place, earning 3rd in the 170 pound weight class. The wrestlers will travel to Wylie High School on Saturday to compete in another large public school tournament.
