Lion Sports Update 01/18

Wrestling
The varsity wresting team competed in the St. Mark’s Duals this past Friday here at St. Mark’s. The team beat All Saints in the dual, but lost to St. John’s and McKinney Christian. Wrestlers Tucker Ribman ’18, Eli Ware ’17, Andrew Whigham ’17, and Will Wood ’18 all went undefeated in this dual tournament. The team takes the mat again this Saturday at the Prep State Duals in Houston.

Basketball
The varsity basketball team competed in two SPC counter games last week. On Tuesday, the Lions hosted Ft. Worth Country Day and forged a 9-point lead at halftime. However, St. Mark’s went cold in the second half and found themselves trailing by 2 with a minute remaining in the game. A clutch 3-pointer by freshman Andrew Laczkowski ’20 gave St. Mark’s the lead again, and an important defensive stand put leading scorer, Will Ingram ’17, at the free throw line with 20 seconds remaining. Will made one of two free throws to extend the margin to 2, but Country Day made a contested 3 in the deep corner to retake the lead. With 1 second left, the Lions used three timeouts and a little trickery to generate a terrific layup opportunity, but Country Day made a miraculous recovery to block the shot and hand St. Mark’s its first conference loss. On Friday, the final score once again did not go the Lions’ way. For the second game in a row, St. Mark’s struggled to knock down open perimeter shots, and the Greenhill Hornets – fueled by a raucous home crowd – took full advantage on their way to a 70-55 victory. Next up, the Lions host a pair of critical counter games against Trinity Valley (1/18 at 7:30pm) and Casady (1/20 at 6:30pm).

Soccer
The first week of the SPC North Zone counter season proved to be challenging for the varsity soccer team. After a strong start at home to Ft. Worth Country Day, the Lions found themselves down a goal after making a critical error in distributing the ball from their defensive third. With renewed confidence, the Falcons played their most complete match of the season eventually scoring a goal late in the second half to seal the victory. Despite the loss, Jeremy Kerber ’17 played a phenomenal match in goal, making several critical saves including two from point-blank range that kept the Lions within striking distance. In midfield, Seth Weprin ‘19 led the Lions with inspired play that created several chances for his teammates before eventually coming within inches of an equalizer when his well struck shot from close range caromed off the post and out of play. On Friday the team traveled to Greenhill. A more focused and determined St. Mark’s side played with a level of intensity that established the run of play in their favor. While the Lions controlled play throughout the evening, the Hornets’ defense stiffened in the final fourth and St. Mark’s was unable to find the key that would unlock the door to the back of Greenhill’s net. Meanwhile, Greenhill made the most of their opportunities by scoring on two well-placed free kicks in the 20th and 70th minute. Despite strong play and genuine effort, the Lions once again left the field without earning so much as a point. The Lions have little time to ponder their misfortune as they host Trinity Valley on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) and Casady on Friday (7:00 p.m.), needing to earn six points from the two matches to put them back in contention in the north zone.

Swim
The varsity swim team competed on the road against two of the stronger large public schools in the area. On Tuesday, the team swam at Highland Park and despite some improved times by our swimmers, fell to the Scots by a score of 72-98. On Thursday, the team went to Southlake to face the Southlake Carroll Dragons. The Dragons defeated the Lions 75-234.  This week, the swim team will travel to Greenhill on Thursday at 6 pm.
