Lion Sports Update 12/06

Basketball
The varsity basketball team participated in the Carrollton/Farmer’s Branch Classic over the weekend. The tournament began on Thursday with a matchup against Denton Ryan. Despite double-digit efforts from junior Sam Sussman and senior Will Ingram, the Lions couldn’t quite overcome an early deficit and lost their first-round game. On Friday, St. Mark’s was once again down early, but thanks to a balanced offensive attack in which every player scored, the Lions made a second-half surge to defeat Ranchview by a score of 51-40. During the final day of the tournament, St. Mark’s matched up with Pinkston. Yet again, the Lions dug themselves an early hole, but a flurry of steals and scores cut a 27 point deficit to 5 with three minutes remaining. Unfortunately, though, time ran out, as St. Mark’s was eliminated from the tournament and dropped to 7-5 on the season. The Lions will return home for a pair of contests this Thursday (6:30 p.m. vs Canterbury) and Friday (7:30 p.m. vs Shelton).

Soccer
Last week, the varsity soccer team lost two tightly contested matches by the same score of 2-1 to both Kinkaid and ESD. In both matches, the winning goal was scored within  five minutes of full time. Corday Cruz ’17 scored the lone goal against Kinkaid while Hyer Thomas ’17 scored against ESD. On a positive note, both Middle School teams and the junior varsity earned well-deserved victories over the Eagles on Friday night. This week the soccer team will go on the road for games at Cistercian on Tuesday and Trinity Valley on Thursday.

Swim
The varsity swim team had its first action of the year last week. They had their time trials on Tuesday and then hosted the St. Mark’s Invitational on Thursday. There were 170 swimmers at the SM Invitational and our boys had a lot of fast swims and displayed good team chemistry. The meet was not scored. This week, the Lions swimmers will host Cistercian on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. in the Rogers Natatorium and then will travel to compete in the TISCA 5A meet on Friday and Saturday which will be held at the Bruce Eubanks Natatorium in Frisco, TX.

Wrestling
The varsity wrestling team competed in the “Rumble at the Rock” this past Saturday in Rockwall. The Lions placed two wrestlers: Tucker Ribman ’18 finished 2nd at 132 lbs. and Will Wood ’18 took 3rd at 113 lbs. The Wrestling team will host the Lone Star Pool Tournament this Friday (JV only) and Saturday (Varsity) in Spencer Gym.  The Varsity event begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
