Lion Sports Update 11/30

Soccer
The soccer season began in fine fashion as both middle school teams defeated Prestonwood Christian Academy on Thursday, November 17. The seventh grade team won decisively while the eighth grade team won by converting a last-minute penalty kick. The following day, the junior varsity soundly defeated John Paul II (4-0) while the varsity team held off a late Cardinal charge to win 2-1 on goals from Isaiah Kuzunga ’17 and Daniel Chavez ’17. Arjun Singh ’18 and Scott Smythe ’17 set up the tallies, respectively. On Tuesday, November 22, the Lions lost 0-1 at Bishop Dunne. The match produced several scoring opportunities for both teams, however the lone fifth-minute goal, due in large part to defensive miscommunication, proved to be the difference as the Lions season record leveled at a win and a loss. The Lions take the pitch again this week in two home games: against Kinkaid on Thursday (8:00 p.m.) and ESD on Friday (7:00 p.m.).

Wrestling
The varsity wrestling team competed in the Rockwall – Heath Invitational on the first Saturday of Thanksgiving Break. At 120 lbs., Will Wood ’18 went 3-1 to place 2nd in the tournament.  In the finals, his only loss came to a returning 6A state qualifier from Rockwall by a score of 3-2.  At 160 lbs., Colin Neuhoff ’19 went 3-1 and took 2nd place in the tournament.  At 170 lbs., Eli Ware ’17 went 3-2 and placed 4th.  All three of Eli’s wins came via the pin.

Basketball
The varsity basketball team is off to a 5-3 start this season. On Grandparents’ Day before the Thanksgiving break, the Lions hosted non-conference opponent Bishop Lynch. The game seesawed back and forth with neither team ever leading by more than 6 points. With 15 seconds on the clock, Bishop Lynch trailed by 1 but had a chance to tie or take the lead with a 1-and-1 free throw situation. The first shot missed, however, and led to wild series of events in which St. Mark’s – unable to fully possess a rebound or loose ball – watched Bishop Lynch attempt several short shots that all somehow rolled around the rim and out. It was a fortunate win for the home team and created a bit of momentum heading into a pre-Thanksgiving tournament in Fort Worth. The Lions won their first 3 games of the tournament and, coincidentally, squared off against Bishop Lynch in the championship game. This time, St. Mark’s couldn’t quite pull off the miracle and finished as the tournament runner-up. The Lions play at home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. before competing in the Carrollton/Farmer’s Branch Independent School District Classic this Thursday–Saturday.
