Crew Competes in Nationals

Over the weekend of June 11, the varsity crew competed with more than 200 top teams in the 2016 Youth National Championships in West Windsor, New Jersey on Lake Mercer. The varsity quad of Aiden Blinn ’17, August Graue ’17, Taylor Rohrich ’16, and Alden James ’16 competed in the 4x (quad) event and placed 19th in the nation.

In May, the varsity crew team traveled to Oklahoma City at the USRowing Central Youth Championship. The regional field has grown increasingly competitive and high winds added to the challenge. The final event of the year was a great success with several boats qualifying in the time trials to race in the finals with three boats medaling. Both JV quads made it to the finals, as well as a JV double, a Varsity quad, a single and the Lightweight double. The JV quad of Jonathon Libby ’17, Dion Stroot ’17, Brian Buckenham ’17 and Eduardo Ludwig-Bernardo ’18 nailed the final with a 1st place finish. The varsity quad finished second to qualify to continue on to the Youth National Championships on June 10-12 (in New Jersey) and Alden James finished 3rd in the single finals.

The varsity lacrosse team made their first Super Regional appearance since the 2013 season. Led by goalie, John Gunnin ’18, and senior defensemen Max Sadlowski, Bryce Killian, and John Landry, the Lions were able to weather a slow offensive day by holding the Memorial Mustangs to 4 goals in a 5-4 victory on Saturday. On Sunday in the round of 8, St. Mark’s took on Westlake High School who came in ranked #1 in the Central division. Westlake got out to a fast start and led 7-1 at half time. Midway through the third quarter the Lions trailed 9-1 before stringing together 5 straight goals to bring the score to 9-6 in the 4th. The responsive effort was truly a representation of the fight the team has displayed throughout the entire season. Unable to close the gap, the Lions fell 10-6. The Lions finished the season at 16-10 overall. It was a long and hard fought season. Special recognition goes to our seniors for leading the team back to the state tournament.
