Upper School Publications Garner National Acclaim

Three major Upper School publications were honored with national awards at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s annual convention in New York. This year, the CSPA judged more than 1,200 newspapers, magazines, yearbooks, and digital publications from the 2013–2014 academic year.
 
The Marque literary magazine, edited by Halbert Bai ’14 and Jonathan Ng ’14, received its third consecutive Gold Crown; the Marksmen yearbook, edited by Matt Mahowald ’14, received a Silver Crown; and The ReMarker student newspaper, edited by Dylan Clark ’14, received its record twelfth consecutive Gold Crown. 
 
In addition, this year’s ReMarker was recently named the Best Newspaper at the Dallas Morning News’ 24th annual High School Journalism Day & Competition, out of more than 40 public and private schools who entered. Marksmen journalists also distinguished themselves in several categories, placing first in Sports Reporting (Zach Naidu ’16), Long Feature (Cameron Clark ’16, Philip Smart ’16, Shourya Kumar ’15), Headline Portfolio (Anvit Reddy ’16), Cartoon/Illustration Portfolio (Abhi Thummala ’16), and Page Design Portfolio (Vik Pattabi ’15). This year’s ReMarker editor is Matthew Conley ’15.
 
Ray Westbrook, Gene and Alice Oltrogge Master Teaching Chair, serves as adviser for The ReMarker and Marksmen. The Marque is sponsored by Lynne Weber, Trustee Master Teaching Chair in Humanities, and English teacher GayMarie Kurdi.
