Through reports in the news, we all have become aware of the growing problem of antibiotic resistant germs including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Educating ourselves on how to prevent infections is important.

Over the weekend of October 12-13, St. Mark's sent six teams to a local debate tournament at R.L. Turner High School and took home championship honors in both the novice and varsity divisions.

Amid the Centennial Celebration on Saturday, April 21, the St. Mark’s Photography Program made history of its own as the Association of Texas Photography Instructors (ATPI) named it the Top Photography Program in the state.

In less than two weeks, Centennial Weekend will kick off with Alumni Panel Discussions on Friday, April 20. St. Mark’s students will have the option of attending six different hour-long panels with leading alumni from the business, public service, technology, and entertainment sectors.

On October 29th, Associate Head of Upper School John Ashton traveled to West Point Military Academy with senior class president Asa Schachar and junior class president Nathan Ip to attend the 21st annual National Conference on Ethics in America.

After losing their first debate, Swayze Smartt ’07 and Jordan Blumenthal ’08 won seven straight to claim the varsity division of the Hockaday debate tournament on November 10-11.

St. Mark’s photography students participated in and hosted this year’s Association of Texas Photography Instructors Fall Contest. This year, there were over 2,800 entries from 51 schools across four states.

St. Mark’s welcomed record numbers of alumni and parents back to campus the weekend of October 27-28 for the 2006 Homecoming. As part of the yearlong Centennial Celebration, the weekend included the Homecoming Kickoff Reception on Friday evening on campus in the A. Earl Cullum, Jr., Alumni Commons, a meeting of the Board of Trustees on Saturday morning, followed by on campus activities for alumni and their families and finally Class Reunion events on Saturday night. Classes ending in 1’s and 6’s celebrated Reunions during this historic Centennial year.

On May 4th, the U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced the selection of St. Mark's senior, Jason C. Sanford, as a 2006 Presidential Scholar.

This past weekend seniors Tom Ferenc and David Lee had an outstanding showing at the Tournament of Champions (TOC) held annually in Lexington, Kentucky.

On Thursday, April 27, 2006, St. Mark's School of Texas announced that it had received a gift of $10,000,000 from Dallas civic leaders Harlan and Kathy Crow. The gift is the largest in the school’s nearly one-hundred year history and the largest gift ever to an independent school in the state of Texas.

Three St. Mark’s teams competed at the J.J. Pearce Latin Tournament on Sunday, January 8 in the Upper, Lower, and Novice categories. All three teams reached the finals with the Upper and Lower teams winning their divisions and the Novice team coming in second place, in their first ever competition, to a team from Highland Park.

This past weekend the St. Mark's debate squad travelled to the University of Texas to compete in both novice and varsity debate. In the varsity division five St. Marks teams competed against over 100 teams from throughout the country with the sophomores showing they will be a force to be reckoned with for the next two years and the seniors proving they are already among the top twenty teams in the country.

It may be a week earlier in the year than normal, but the Junior-Class-led McDonald's Week, November 7th through 11th, is filled with opportunities to have fun and also benefit the Austin Street Centre.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program announced the names of approximately 1,600 Semifinalists in its 42nd annual academic competition for Black American high school students. Four senior Marksmen were honored with that designation.

Two St. Mark's debate teams competed in the Greenhill Invitational on the weekend of September 16-18.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation released the names of the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in this national scholarship competition. Seventeen Marksmen made the list. In addition, 24 seniors were named Commended Students by the National Meriit Program.

As part of the celebration of The Year of Languages, the Foreign Language Department has arranged a Spanish music concert.

The St. Mark's and Hockaday Community Service committee sends its thanks for the generous donations to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

St. Mark's has set up a system so that families interested in providing temporary housing for Hurricane Katrina refugee families can register their willingness to help.

After several months of very busy construction, St. Mark’s is preparing to open a new Stadium with a synthetic, all-weather field and an expanded eight-lane track. Also included in this project are a new soccer and lacrosse field immediately to the east of the Stadium as well as a new baseball facility on the northeast corner of the athletic fields.

At this year's Scout Jamboree, Marksman Daniel Valella ’08, was chosen to introduce the President of the United States when he came to address the 43,000 scouts.

Marksmen Dean Butler ’11 and Hank Williams ’11 competed with their Pro Skills teammates in July to capture the 6th Grade Boys Division Prime Time National Basketball Championship.

It is with great sadness that St. Mark’s announces the passing of Life Trustee, Malcolm Brachman, who lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday, January 11, 2005.

The sound of bells ringing will soon fill the St. Mark’s campus as installation of the new Roosevelt Family Carillon begins on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 in the St. Mark’s Chapel Tower.

Last year’s Marksmen yearbook, edited by Kane Hochster ’04, and The ReMarker newspaper, edited by Patrick Maluso ’04, have been named finalists for the Crown Awards, presented by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

The Finish Lions did it again! They ran The Rock, The White Rock Lake Marathon, on Sunday, December 12th and beat last year's time.

Thursday evening, December 9, 2004, the Lions basketball team coached by Scott Jolly won the 1,000th game in school history.

For years, parents have recognized the commitment of St. Mark’s faculty and staff by making a holiday gift to the library in their honor. This year, the tradition continues.

Two St. Mark's Freshmen debaters won the novice division of the University of Texas tournament over the December 3-4 weekend.

St. Mark’s recently retained The Blanchard Group, a Virginia-based firm, to update the campus Master Plan. The Board of Trustees selected the firm after a thorough review process that included on-campus presentations from five companies that have expertise in master planning for independent schools, colleges, and universities.

St. Mark's science teacher Bess Amaral set up a community lunar eclipse watch on October 27 at the campus and that effort was included in the newsletter of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory!

The annual opportunity for on-site flu shots at St. Marks, scheduled for November 5, 2004, has been cancelled due to the flu vaccine shortage.

Two St. Mark's Debate Teams reached the semi-finals at a tournament in Washington, D.C., the first weekend in October.

St. Mark’s School of Texas proudly announced on Wednesday, September 15, 2004 that twenty-five members of this year's senior class have been recognized as National Merit Semifinalists. An additional twenty members of the class were named Commended Students in the National Merit Program.

On Thursday, April 15, legendary faculty member Tom Adams was honored for forty years of dedicated service to the school. Two alumni, Robert Sinclair '74 and B.A. Cullum '99 were also recognized for extraordinary volunteer service to St. Mark's.

St. Mark’s graduate Wright Sigmund ’99 was honored by the U.S. Department of Justice on Friday, April 23. He received the United States Justice for Victims of Crime Award.

Thirty-eight Marksmen spent the weekend of April 2-3 in San Antonio at the State Latin Convention and came home with numerous awards.

While the winter season finished with a disappointing cancellation of the SPC tournament due to inclement weather, St. Mark’s athletes equipped themselves exceptionally well with honors across the board.

St. Mark’s School of Texas announced on Tuesday, February 10, 2004, that 18 members of the senior class have been recognized as National Merit Finalists. Twenty-one percent of the 82-member Class of 2004 received the prestigious honor.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program announced on January 21, 2004 that three Marksmen from the Class of 2004 have been named Finalists in their annual academic competition for Black American high school students.

A number of graduating seniors have been actively recruited and plan to pursue intercollegiate athletics next year. Several Marksmen from the Class of 2004 have made preliminary commitments to compete at some of our nation’s top Colleges and Universities.

St. Mark’s Life Skills Program is once again hosting FCD Educational Services to work with our community during the week of February 2-6. FCD (Freedom from Chemical Dependency) is a non-profit organization based in Massachusetts that provides alcohol, tobacco, and other drug education and awareness for schools and colleges.

Congratulations are in order for 17 Marksmen who were recently selected for the All-State Band and Orchestra by The Texas Private School Music Educators Association. Boys traveled to San Antonio January 29-31 to perform in the All-State Concert.

The ReMarker student newspaper was recently named a national finalist for a Columbia Scholastic Presss Association Award. Winners will be announced in March.
