On November 4, 2007, St. Mark’s School of Texas announced an anonymous donor’s record-breaking endowment gift of $10,000,000 to establish the Centennial Endowment Challenge.

Staph/MRSA Prevention at St. Mark’s

Through reports in the news, we all have become aware of the growing problem of antibiotic resistant germs including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Educating ourselves on how to prevent infections is important.

Over the weekend of October 12-13, St. Mark's sent six teams to a local debate tournament at R.L. Turner High School and took home championship honors in both the novice and varsity divisions.

Make plans to cheer the Lions to victory in the SPC Championship game on Thursday, November 1 at 7pm. That following Friday, November 2, school will start at 9am.

Thirty-seven St. Mark's seniors received Letters of Commendation or Semifinalist standing from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The National Scholastic Press Association, headquartered in Minneapolis, recently named the 2006-2007 ReMarker newspaper as a finalist for the Pacemaker Award, the highest award given by the national organization.

A St. Mark’s legend graced the campus on Friday, August 31 when over 40 alumni and several current faculty members celebrated former drama teacher Tony Vintcent and his profound impact on the school’s drama program.

It is with sincere sadness that St. Mark’s shares the loss of Distinguished Alumnus and Life Trustee Sam Papert, Jr. ’37. Sam passed away on the evening of July 3rd at the age of 86.

In June, 44 middle school lacrosse players competed in the Warrior Vail Lacrosse Shootout in Avon, Colorado.

Out of 24 nominations, the Drama Program secured five awards at the Cappies Gala held on May 14 at the Dallas Children’s Theater.

Following an exciting showing at the Texas Junior Rowing Championships, St. Mark's Crew took three boats to the Central Youth Rowing Championships in Oklahoma City on May 11.

The SPC Tournament on May 3-4 made way for the Lions once again as St. Mark’s claimed three of the five championships. Congratulations to all these fine athletes for their outstanding achievements this season and to the Baseball, Lacrosse, and Track & Field teams who acquired SPC crowns.

To say the SPC Meet exceeded expectation would be an understatement.

Over the weekend of May 4-6, the debate team traveled to Lexington, Kentucky, to participate in the Tournament of Champions.

The 2006 Marksmen yearbook won the prestigious Pacemaker Award from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) at the conclusion of the organization’s annual spring convention in Denver, Colorado.

The ReMarker newspaper and the Marksmen yearbook took the highest honors on April 21-22 at the annual convention of the Interscholastic League Press Conference, the state’s scholastic journalism organization.

The National Scholastic Press Association selected Josh Abramson ’07, Eric Rosenbaum ’07, Jake McAuley ’08, and Andrew Slottje to its Journalism Honor Roll.

Amid the Centennial Celebration on Saturday, April 21, the St. Mark’s Photography Program made history of its own as the Association of Texas Photography Instructors (ATPI) named it the Top Photography Program in the state.

On Wednesday, April 11, The ReMarker was named “Best Newspaper” for schools under 2000 students; Tomi Maxted ’07 is the editor. Members of The ReMarker staff also received 27 individual awards in the annual competition at The Dallas Morning News High School Journalism Day held at CityPlace.

In less than two weeks, Centennial Weekend will kick off with Alumni Panel Discussions on Friday, April 20. St. Mark’s students will have the option of attending six different hour-long panels with leading alumni from the business, public service, technology, and entertainment sectors.

With less than two weeks remaining before CENTENNIAL WEEKEND, St. Mark’s announced that Steve Miller ‘61 and The Steve Miller Band will perform at the April 21 Concert in Hunt Stadium.

On October 29th, Associate Head of Upper School John Ashton traveled to West Point Military Academy with senior class president Asa Schachar and junior class president Nathan Ip to attend the 21st annual National Conference on Ethics in America.

After losing their first debate, Swayze Smartt ’07 and Jordan Blumenthal ’08 won seven straight to claim the varsity division of the Hockaday debate tournament on November 10-11.

St. Mark’s photography students participated in and hosted this year’s Association of Texas Photography Instructors Fall Contest. This year, there were over 2,800 entries from 51 schools across four states.

St. Mark’s welcomed record numbers of alumni and parents back to campus the weekend of October 27-28 for the 2006 Homecoming. As part of the yearlong Centennial Celebration, the weekend included the Homecoming Kickoff Reception on Friday evening on campus in the A. Earl Cullum, Jr., Alumni Commons, a meeting of the Board of Trustees on Saturday morning, followed by on campus activities for alumni and their families and finally Class Reunion events on Saturday night. Classes ending in 1’s and 6’s celebrated Reunions during this historic Centennial year.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of the Semifinalists in the 52nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Twenty-five St. Mark's seniors were named Semifinalists and another twenty-three were named Commended Students.

On August 29, 2006, St. Mark’s School of Texas officially kicked off its Centennial year at the opening convocation.

It is with genuine sadness that St. Mark’s announces the loss of Robert K. Hoffman ’65 – past President of the Board of Trustees, Distinguished Alumnus, Life Trustee, former Alumni Association President, and great friend of the School. Robert died from Leukemia on Sunday, August 20, 2006.

On May 4th, the U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced the selection of St. Mark's senior, Jason C. Sanford, as a 2006 Presidential Scholar.

On Thursday, April 27, 2006, St. Mark's School of Texas announced that it had received a gift of $10,000,000 from Dallas civic leaders Harlan and Kathy Crow. The gift is the largest in the school’s nearly one-hundred year history and the largest gift ever to an independent school in the state of Texas.

Student publications at St. Mark's earned a rare "trifecta" at one of the nation's most prestigious scolastic press association's convention last week.

Back-to-Back Wins at major debate tournaments in that past few weeks have created momentum for the St. Mark's debaters.

At the recent Area C regional competition, St. Mark's Latin students came away with lots of awards including a trip by the Upper Certamen team to the State Convention.

Three St. Mark’s teams competed at the J.J. Pearce Latin Tournament on Sunday, January 8 in the Upper, Lower, and Novice categories. All three teams reached the finals with the Upper and Lower teams winning their divisions and the Novice team coming in second place, in their first ever competition, to a team from Highland Park.

This past weekend the St. Mark's debate squad travelled to the University of Texas to compete in both novice and varsity debate. In the varsity division five St. Marks teams competed against over 100 teams from throughout the country with the sophomores showing they will be a force to be reckoned with for the next two years and the seniors proving they are already among the top twenty teams in the country.

During the month of November, two separate Evensong Services, will take place in the St. Mark's Chapel. The St. Mark's community and visitors are welcome to attend one or both of the services.

St. Mark's Varsity Water Polo team made the top 5 at this year's State Championships.

The Alliance Francaise du Nord du Texas will honor Daniel P. Nevot on Saturday, October 15, 2005, at The University of Texas at Dallas.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program announced the names of approximately 1,600 Semifinalists in its 42nd annual academic competition for Black American high school students. Four senior Marksmen were honored with that designation.

The National Scholastic Press Association named the 2004-2005 ReMarker newspaper as a finalist for the Pacemaker Award.

Two Alumni Water Polo Games are planned for this fall.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation released the names of the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in this national scholarship competition. Seventeen Marksmen made the list. In addition, 24 seniors were named Commended Students by the National Meriit Program.

As part of the celebration of The Year of Languages, the Foreign Language Department has arranged a Spanish music concert.

St. Mark's has set up a system so that families interested in providing temporary housing for Hurricane Katrina refugee families can register their willingness to help.

ISAS Dallas schools are working together to ensure that all independent school students displaced by Katrina are placed in school.

St. Mark's has responded on several fronts to the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina.

After several months of very busy construction, St. Mark’s is preparing to open a new Stadium with a synthetic, all-weather field and an expanded eight-lane track. Also included in this project are a new soccer and lacrosse field immediately to the east of the Stadium as well as a new baseball facility on the northeast corner of the athletic fields.

Three Marksmen and two faculty members will be heading for Miami, Florida, after the Thanksgiving Break to attend the annual NAIS People of Color Conference and Student Diversity Leadership Conference.

St. Mark’s recently retained The Blanchard Group, a Virginia-based firm, to update the campus Master Plan. The Board of Trustees selected the firm after a thorough review process that included on-campus presentations from five companies that have expertise in master planning for independent schools, colleges, and universities.

St. Mark’s School of Texas proudly announced on Wednesday, September 15, 2004 that twenty-five members of this year's senior class have been recognized as National Merit Semifinalists. An additional twenty members of the class were named Commended Students in the National Merit Program.

The Community Service committee is already busy with projects that need donations from the St. Mark's community.

Kalen Thornton, Class of 2000, a standout defensive end at St. Mark’s and at the University of Texas, recently became a member of the famed Dallas Cowboys football franchise, earning a spot on their 54 man roster for the 2004-05 season.

St. Mark’s closed the books on fiscal year 2003-2004 with record level contributions. Two major testamentary gifts from long-time benefactors helped push total gift receipts past the $8 million mark.

St. Mark's School of Texas Planetarium attracted big crowds for its public shows "Ring World" on July 2nd and 3rd.

St. Mark's hosted the Eleventh Annual International Boys’ Schools Coalition Conference June 27-30 and welcomed nearly 300 educators including Headmasters and teaching faculty from boys’ schools around the world.

The end of May has once again brought great excitement and energy to campus. A very promising group of young men walked across the stage on Friday evening, May 21 and joined the ranks of St. Mark’s alumni which number more than 3,000 strong.

On Thursday, April 15, legendary faculty member Tom Adams was honored for forty years of dedicated service to the school. Two alumni, Robert Sinclair '74 and B.A. Cullum '99 were also recognized for extraordinary volunteer service to St. Mark's.

On Wednesday, April 28 Jeff Marx and Joe Ehrmann, co-authors of a recent book entitled, "Season of Life: A football star, a ball boy and a journey to manhood." will visit Upper School Chapel.

St. Mark’s graduate Wright Sigmund ’99 was honored by the U.S. Department of Justice on Friday, April 23. He received the United States Justice for Victims of Crime Award.

While the winter season finished with a disappointing cancellation of the SPC tournament due to inclement weather, St. Mark’s athletes equipped themselves exceptionally well with honors across the board.

The St. Mark’s Wrestling Team captured its 8th State Championship this weekend in Houston at the Kinkaid School.

Homecoming 2003 marked several firsts for St. Mark’s. Two events of major significance occurred including the first ever Class Reunion Campaign and the first ever Fiftieth Class Reunion.

A number of campus activities are being held during the month of February in honor of Black History Month – from Chapel talks and assemblies, to group discussions and history lessons.

This past weekend, February 13-16, several Marksmen debaters competed at the University of California Berkeley's Debate Tournament.

St. Mark’s School of Texas announced on Tuesday, February 10, 2004, that 18 members of the senior class have been recognized as National Merit Finalists. Twenty-one percent of the 82-member Class of 2004 received the prestigious honor.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program announced on January 21, 2004 that three Marksmen from the Class of 2004 have been named Finalists in their annual academic competition for Black American high school students.

A number of graduating seniors have been actively recruited and plan to pursue intercollegiate athletics next year. Several Marksmen from the Class of 2004 have made preliminary commitments to compete at some of our nation’s top Colleges and Universities.

St. Mark’s Life Skills Program is once again hosting FCD Educational Services to work with our community during the week of February 2-6. FCD (Freedom from Chemical Dependency) is a non-profit organization based in Massachusetts that provides alcohol, tobacco, and other drug education and awareness for schools and colleges.

Congratulations are in order for 17 Marksmen who were recently selected for the All-State Band and Orchestra by The Texas Private School Music Educators Association. Boys traveled to San Antonio January 29-31 to perform in the All-State Concert.

The ReMarker student newspaper was recently named a national finalist for a Columbia Scholastic Presss Association Award. Winners will be announced in March.

After competing successfully in the Dallas county tournament late in the fall at the University of Texas at Dallas, St. Mark’s BEST robotics team carried their robot to the Southwest Regional Championships in Austin for the second straight year to compete against teams from the Southwestern U.S.

In a special section of the January 4th issue of The Dallas Morning News, the SportsDay staff chose local athletes for All-Area and All-District Teams. Marksmen athletes were named in Football, Water Polo, and Volleyball.

Two new faculty members came on board for the 2003-2004 school year to fill Master Teacher positions - one in the science department and one in humanities.

The St. Mark's community welcomed two new administrators for the 2003-2004 school year. Chaplain Father Huddleston and Director of Finance and Administration Suzanne Townsend have already had a positive impact at the school.

"Daughter of the Stars" - a family planetarium show will be offered Thursday, November 20, at 7:00pm in the St. Mark's Planetarium.

Five runners finished in the top 10 at the SPC Cross Country Championship, helping the Lions capture the first Cross Country SPC Championship since 1990.

The first event of this year's Homecoming Weekend was the dedication and unveiling of an official Texas State Historical Marker at St. Mark's.

St. Mark's art teacher Scott Barber is involved in the Dallas and Fort Worth art world on several fronts. He is sharing his artistic vision with our students five days a week and extending that expertise to the greater Dallas area in his free time.
