Lion Sports Update (04/30)

BASEBALL
Last Tuesday night, the varsity baseball team traveled to Ft. Worth to face Trinity Valley. In the top of the second, St. Mark's scored first as Jackson Ostella drew a bases loaded walk. The Lions then tacked on another run in the third as Alex Barrett's sac fly to CF plated Jack Frary. Starting pitcher Jackson Williams was solid for the first two innings, but the Trojans took the lead after multiple walks and a couple untimely Lions' mistakes gave Trinity Valley a 4-2 lead. Unfortunately, St. Mark's was unable to recover as the pitching staff's 12 walks and nine hits allowed staked the home team with an insurmountable 11-3 victory. On Thursday, the Lions welcomed cross-town rival Greenhill for their last counter game. Behind strong crowd support for Senior Appreciation Day, St. Mark's got on the board early after William Everitt's single brought in Jackson Williams. In the bottom of the fourth, John Stephen Hohmann's single to RF scored Alex Dahlander to add a second run while Jackson Ostella's brilliant squeeze bunt plated Mitch Galardi. The Lions' offense wasn't finished as Grayson Redmond's triple brought in Jack Frary, and Alex Barrett's sac fly to CF scored Redmond. St. Mark's ace, Deven Pietrzak, hurled yet another great game but eventually ran out of steam after allowing two bases loaded walks before retiring the third out in the top of the sixth. As Greenhill tried to rally, Alex Barrett's terrific throw out at home plate of a Greenhill runner took the sting out of the Hornets' bats. Entering the seventh inning with a three-run lead, Lucas Petrikas shut the door on the game, earning a save in the home squad's thrilling win. St. Mark's will enter SPC tournament play on Thursday as the #6 seed and will face St. John’s @ Parish Episcopal at 7 p.m.

TENNIS
Last week, SM tennis traveled to TVS on Tuesday to take home a 4-1 win. It was a late night, but Aryaman Lahoti played a tough three set match and managed to get the best of his opponent, so shout out to him! On Thursday, the Lions played the other undefeated SPC North Zone school, Greenhill, and although SM fell in a close 2-3 match, the boys played well and competed hard. The team concludes the season at the SPC Tournament on Thursday at 5 pm at LB Houston Tennis Center.
